Judging Criteria

Our selection committee evaluates film entries based on several based criteria: Originality, Creativity, Production Value,  Structure, Characters, Cinematography, Direction,  Entertainment Value, Music, Overall Quality of Production  and Sound.

Film judging is not an exact science. Powerful new ideas, expressions and methods of communicating and effectively telling a story arise constantly, reshaping old ideas or paving over them completely. Not every Queer West Film Festival submission scores 10’s across the judging table. The weight of each category varies with the nature of each entry; an Queer West Film Festival entry is much more than the sum of its parts.

Call to Action
Does the film create a desire in the viewer to make a change, spread the message further or taking a call to action?

Are personalities distinctive, compelling, multi-layered, and unpredictable? Do protagonist and antagonist have clear and active goals?

Is there a high quality of cinematography or videography demonstrated in the work?

Is there effective use of imagination as evidenced in the entry?

Entertainment Value
Does the story keep the viewer’s or reader’s attention?  It is fun, engaging, or thought provoking?

Music Score
Is the music score suited to the film and does it help tell the story?

Does the film have uniqueness and originality of the premise or the story?

Overall Quality of Production or Script
Is the entry well constructed and well executed as a whole?

Does timing of the action, unfolding of plot elements and character development follow a smooth pattern?

Does the films actions, events, conflicts, and turning points propel the story forward. How does the story unfolds?

Production Value
Was the entry made for our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) audience or someone else, if someone it won’t be screened?

Sound Quality
Is the dialogue clear and not hindered by any noise or music score?

Does the framework of the film,  make effective use of three-act, odyssey, linear or non-linear story progression?

Submission Presentation

Does the entry contain a film synopsis? Is there a directors biography?  Are there film stills and or a trailer. A good film presentation means more acceptability and less work  for the poor event listing editor. We want your film to standout from a less than stellar listing,  on some other festival web site.
