– Arts Festival 2006

1st annual Parkdale Pride Party 2006

(In 2007 name changed to Queer West Fest)

Press Release

The Gay West Community Network is presenting their first annual Parkdale Pride Party, happening Saturday June 10th at the Rhino Bar upstairs lounge on Queen Street West. The Network has been around for 10 years promoting queer events and happenings, as well as the multitude of queer-friendly establishments that are in the west end of Toronto. It’s a place to party, as well as a place to call home.

This party is about bringing various members of the community together to celebrate the beginning of summer and act as a prelude to the Toronto Pride festivities. There will be a spectrum of DJ’s spinning throughout the night, along with a couple of short flicks from the Rehab Film Festival happening the following weekend in Parkdale.

For those that are more energetic, the Gay West Bike Club will be meeting for their monthly ride at noon on the same day. This “social bike club” generally meets the last Sunday of every month but this is a special Pride Ride to coincide with this event.

Pride Queer West Toronto Events 2006 – We love our smaller neighbourhood events in the Queer West Village, because we’re Democratic, Outrageous  and Positively Revolutionary!  The festival was a three day event with 32 affiliated events over a course of three weeks.

Gay Toronto’s – Queer West Village holds the 2nd largest series of Pride parties in the city. Their goal is to be Number one! Pride West is organized by Gay West Community Network a centre serving the LGBTTIQ community for nearly 10 years. Pride Queer West Toronto Committee is a non-profit, volunteer based organization, not associated with Pride Toronto Organization. 15 years ago, there was not much happening in the queer west end of our city. “My, how we have grown since then” .said Parkdale Pride organizer Bryen Dunn” Unlike Pride Toronto, which is a huge stage-managed national tourist attraction. Pride Queer West is a series of small queer neighbourhood events, inclusive, democratic, outrageous – and positively revolutionary. What No pride parade? What no Pride parade? The Committee thinks a variety of Pride parties throughout the village and a Marketplace Fair is more in tune with our community needs.

The Queer Village in Toronto West is comprised of four diverse neighbourhoods, Dupont, High Park, Trinity Bellwoods and Parkdale (founded in 1878) considered by many to be the heart of the village. Gay Pride is our day to say, “We’re here. We’re proud of who we are. We’re celebrating ourselves, no matter what the rest of you think.”
